Midsomer Norton Fayre

In 1248 a Royal Charter for a fayre was granted to Hugh de Vivonne who held the manor at Midsomer Norton. It was to be held 22 – 24 June, the vigil of St John the Baptist, the patron saint of the Parish Church. From medieval times to at least 1910 the event operated as a cattle fair. However, by the end of the 19th century the entertainment element began to take over in the form of a steam-driven ‘Fun Fair’. After disappearing for a number of years in the mid twentieth century, the fayre was revived by Midsomer Norton Community Trust in 2014 as a free, open access annual community event.
